Title: What do you wish you had asked your psychiatrist before beginning treatment?
Post by: Joseph Martinez on Jun 08, 2026, 10:12 AM
I have my first psychiatric consultation scheduled in a couple of weeks, and I'm trying to prepare so I can make the most of the appointment. The problem is that I've never worked with a psychiatrist before, so I'm not entirely sure what questions are important to ask during those early conversations.

I've been dealing with ongoing anxiety and periods of low mood that have started affecting my work performance and relationships. After putting it off for a long time, I finally decided to seek professional help. Now that the appointment is actually on the calendar, I'm realizing there are a lot of things I don't know about how psychiatric treatment works.

I'm interested in understanding what I should expect from the treatment process, how progress is typically evaluated, and how people determine whether a psychiatrist is the right fit for them. I also don't want to leave the appointment and later realize there were important topics I never brought up.

For those who have already been through this, were there any questions you wish you had asked during your first visit or before committing to treatment? Looking back, what information helped you feel more comfortable and confident moving forward?

I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences. Since this is all new to me, advice from people who have been in the same position would be really helpful.
